A Short History of the Electric Guitar

Electric guitars are strongly associated with famous musicians of the twentieth century—and may be the iconic musical instrument of our time. Here’s a brief history of their rise in popular music.

During the Big Band Era in the 20’s and 30’s, performers experimented with attaching microphones to acoustic guitars in order to amplify the sound. Most electric guitars were hollow-bodied acoustics with electric pickups. But the hollow space within the guitar produced vibrations that made harsh feedback when interacting with electric pickups.

Manufacturers experimented with solid-body guitars to get rid of the feedback. One of the earlier solid-body guitars was an aluminium instrument known as the “Frying Pan” or “Pancake Guitar.” In 1940, Les Paul attempted a solid-body instrument called the “log guitar,” so called because it was a simple post equipped with neck, strings, and pickups.

The electric guitar did not hit commercial success until the 1950’s, when Fender released its first solid-body model: the Esquire. The Esquire was followed by the Telecaster and finally, in 1954, the Stratocaster.

The aggressive sound of the electric guitar became characteristic of rock and roll in the 60’s and 70’s. It was a high-profile instrument during this time, appearing on stage with dozens of famous bands and musicians.

This created demand for affordable electric guitars. In the 60’s and 70’s, electric guitars were too expensive for ordinary buyers. But it wasn’t until the 1980’s that Japanese manufacturers stepped forward with affordable electric guitars that sounded good. This put pressure on American companies such as Gibson and Fender to provide their own affordable lines.

Today, the electric guitar is one of the most prolific instruments in popular music. You can find it in a wide variety of genres, from metal to New Age.

Another thing to consider is that although it shows it how you should play, a guitar tutorial DVD cannot tell you when you're making a mistake and how to correct it. A guitar teacher can only really provide this kind of constructive feedback. A guitar tutor can be truly inspirational and offer positive feedback when you're progressing which will keep you motivated and dedicated to continue playing your guitar, but a guitar ‘how-to’ DVD won't know if what you're playing is good or bad.

So there you have it. If you can afford it, I’d recommend a private tutor as it is probably the most recommended learning strategy by all of the experts but a guitar tutorial on DVD can is definitely an acceptable compromise for people like me who get bored with theory books, but don't have the time and money to pay a professional guitar teacher.

Whichever method you choose, make sure that you enjoy it. Make it fun and continue to practise as often as you can and I promise that you will learn to play the guitar much more quickly than you first imagined.

Tips For The Solo Musician

Here are some tips for the solo wind musician. If you play, woodwinds, brass, strings, or any single line instrument. You can make a substantial amount of money using your play-a-long library.That's right!...Your play-a-long library can be a goldmind of income.

I know it works because I've done it. If I can do it, anybody should be able to do it. Here's the plan.

First: You have all of these wonderful play-a-longs that you use to practice with. You have spent many, many hours learning these songs, and perfecting your talent. A lot of these play-a-longs are really great accompaniment, and some are recorded by professional musicians.

Well!...Why not put together a nice sounding PA, or sound system, (what ever you can afford)use all of those wonderful play-a-longs you've had for years, put some song sets together, go out and target all the venues in your area that would be great for a solo musician as yourself to perform in, and make some easy money. Sound crazy?...think again, you will be surprised to find out just how many places want live entertainment, but dont have the room, or the budget to hire a full band.

Here's an example from my real experiences. I have played a restaurant in early afternoon, a coffee shop after work hours, and played with my regular band that night. The result,...Three times the income that I would have normally made that day.

I charge $50-$100 for small venues, $100-$200 for larger establishments, and parties, $200 and up for high dollar fundtions. You have to be the judge as to how much you need to charge per gig. Also keep in mind your expenses.

Oh!...I forgot to mention the tips. That's extra bravy , or icing on the cake.

So go ahead!...Make that money! Put those old dusty play-a-longs to work.

THE SOLO MUSICIANS TOOLBOX

If you are a solo musician, there are tools that you should know about, and have in your tool box. It is best to be prepared for whatever comes your way in the form of gigs, and musical opportunities. In this article I will go over some of the general things in the form of gear, hardware, and software, that will give you an edge in this competetive, and demanding world. Keep in mind that these are all suggestions, and it depends on your personal circumstances as to what you are, and are not able to obtain.

I will asume that you already have the musical instrument of your choice, and that you have already spent the thousands of hours that it takes to perfect your talent. There is no way around it!...You get out of it what you put into it. If you spend the time to perfect your talent, you will definatly reap the benefits.

So,...Lets get started. I will list all of the items that I have in mind for this article, and where to obtain them. In some cases, a brief discription on what to do with them.

1. PA equipment: You will need some kind of PA equipment, preferably something small and compact, but of efficient sound quality

2. Microphone: You will need a microphone for the times when you are showing off that great voice of yours. You will also need a microphone stand.

3. Speaker Stands: I recommend speaker stands for your speakers, to raise your speakers up above peoples heads when playing in restaurants, and coffee shops, ect... You dont want to drive people away, or blow anybodys ear drum.

4. Promo Stand: You will need a promo stand that you can use to place your promo material, your CD's, and any of your contact material for people to see, purchase, and take as they come, and go. This can be something that is portable, small and compact, but looks presentable.

5. Tip Jar: I recommend a tip jar, something that, again, looks presentable.

6. Play-a-Long Library: I recommend a play-a-long library for all musicians, especially for solo musicians. As I have stated in my previous article, "Tips for the solo musician", you can make a living just playing solo gigs, and targeting small establishments.

7. CD, or, Cassette player: You should have a CD, or cassette player with a pitch control to play your play-a-longs through your PA.

8. Computer: If at all possible, you should have a powerful enough computer to record your own CD's. You can also make your own Play-a-longs with your own style of music.

9. Recording Software: You will need some kind of recording software for your computer. I recommend, Cakewalk.

10. Soundcard: You will need, in some cases, a sound card for your computer. I recommend, Sound Blaster Live.

11. Keyboard: I think all musicians should have some kind of keyboard. There are hundreds to choose from, according to your budget.

12. CD Burning Software: You should have some kind of CD burning software. Again, there are hundreds of choices. Microsoft Media Player is free.

13. Business Card Software: I recommend some kind of business card software for your computer. "Parabim Business Card Builder", is a very efficient one.

14. Musicians Website: Every musician should have a website. I recommend, "Host Baby", everything you need in a musicians website is here.

15. Internet Promotion Program: A program to help promote your music, and yourself on the internet. I recommend, "Musicians Power Promotion System".

These are just some of the things that will help you on your quest to be a successful solo musician. One thing to remember is,...Always Act...Look...and Dress proffessionally. That first impression can make, or break you.

Blues Guitar Legends: B. B. King by Nick Koch

He moves slowly now, his 82-year-old body starting to betray him, joints aching from time and the endless miles he's traveled over a lifetime. He steps onto the stage, throws the strap of the Gibson ES-335 over his shoulder and squints slightly into the cheering crowd. His face breaks into a wide, humbled, almost embarrassed smile as a rumbling "Good Evening" floats out to his audience. As his left hand moves to the neck of the guitar and the right hand reaches down and strikes the strings, the years melt away and suddenly you find yourself watching a master craftsman ply his trade. The house fills with those unmistakable midnight blue tones that raise the hairs on the back of your neck. B. B. King half closes his eyes, screws up his face, and...he's off into his own place, taking you with him.

Born Riley B. King on September 16th, 1925 on a plantation in Mississippi, his early life was as a farm worker. A guitar-playing pastor at the Sanctified Church awed him with his playing when B. B. was five years old, but he did not buy his first guitar until he was 12. Working has a house-boy for $15 a month, he saved as much as he could (still needing a loan from his boss) and bought a red Stella Acoustic from a man down the road. Like so many blues guitar players of his time, he gave himself Guitar Lessons with the assistance of a couple of books and the popular recordings of the day. At fifteen he played on the streets for change in his native Indianolo, but later got the itch to move on in search of a music career, hitchhiking to Memphis in 1946.

After busking and playing in gospel groups in Memphis for a year, King was given an opportunity to play on a popular radio local radio show hosted by harmonica legend Sonny Boy Williamson. From there, he moved to regular gigs in Beale Streets clubs. Soon after, B.B. secured a stint on WDIA hosting a radio spot, singing blues and playing records under the self-appointed air-name Beales Street Blues Boy, shortening it to B. B. King. His first recordings were done in 1949, for Sam Phillips' Sun Records, but his first hit came in December 1951 with his remake of Lowell Fulson's "Three O'Clock Blues". He scored four number one R&B hits between 1951 and 1954, including his now signature "You Upset Me Baby".

By 1955, King had quit his radio show on WDIA, bought a bus, and embarked on a cross-country tour. In 1958, the bus hit a gas truck on a bridge in Texas. Although King nor none of his band members were on the bus at the time, the truck driver was killed. It took King several years to pay the debts incurred as a result of the accident.

Although King remained very popular with black audiences, he had yet to break free from the chitlin' circuit. This changed dramatically for King with the recording of "Live at the Regal", a live recording of a show done at a South Side Chicago blues club in 1964. This recording is often referred to as being one of the best lives records ever made.

It was his performance at the 1967 Montreaux Jazz Festival that exposed B. B. to a wider audience. During this time when so many British guitarists were paying homage to American blues artists, King struck well in the U.K. landing an tour opening for The Rolling Stones on their sixth U.S. tour.

In 1970, King recorded his most famous song "The Thrill Is Gone". Immediately recognized from the electric shrill of the opening notes to his booming, friendly voice, it is not only a staple of his shows but also a song that any self-respecting blues guitarist is obligated to learn.

His most famous band mate has always been "Lucille", the guitars named from an incident in Twist, Arkansas. During the show, two men started fighting, a kerosene heater was kicked over, and in moments the wood framed club was on fire. King escaped but ran back inside to rescue his cherished guitar, barely making it out with his life. When King learned that the fight was over a woman named Lucille, King named all of his guitars Lucille to serve as a reminder never to do something that reckless again. Gibson has issued a special commemorative B. B. King signature edition of the famed ES-335 named, of course, Lucille.

King said early on that he wanted to become a blues ambassador to the world, just as Louis Armstrong had done with jazz- and he did just that. In among his distinctive blues guitar licks are elements of rock, jazz and gospel that result in a style uniquely his own. King does not play chords nor does he sing while he plays. King sings out in a warm, friendly manner that deftly combines elements of pain and humor, and when he halts his voice Lucille picks up the song where King leaves off, carrying on in a round robin of singer and guitarist, call and response in the rich Delta tradition.

B. B. has always been a tireless performer. In his early days as a struggling musician, he would often play as many as four towns a night, making it back to WDIA in time for his on-air shift. His touring schedule is legendary; it is estimated that now, in his early eighties, King has played in the neighborhood of twenty thousand shows in his career and is still managing over two hundred shows a year. It's easy to see time wearing him down-he seems to talk more in his shows than he plays these days-but when it comes to King, the thrill is still there.

It's impossible to know how much longer we'll have him around. He has won Grammy's, been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and been awarded several honorary degrees, but he still ties directly to the rich, verdant Delta soil and the heavy tradition that it brought. Holding Your Guitar and Using Your Pick The Correct Way

Each step of learning to play your guitar gets you closer to your ultimate dream and that is to be a "good" guitar player. It is important that you remember to practice each step over and over again until it is just second nature and you cant remember ever having trouble or feeling awkward. You will feel stiff when first starting and you will have to do mental checks to make sure you are positioning yourself properly but in a very short time and there is no point in learning to play any instrument and then skipping the parts we don't like if your going to learn, learn properly the first time.

Find the most comfortable armless chair you can find, that will usually be a dining room chair sit with your lower back against the back of the chair make a conscious effort to stay sitting with good posture don't slouch as this will give you sore back and shoulders and bad habits.

Hold your guitar so the back of the body is against your stomach while the neck is running parallel to the ground. If you are holding your guitar properly the thickest string will be on top whilst the thinnest is closest to the floor. For a left handed person ideally you should buy a guitar made for left handed people but this is not always necessary as I know a lot of lefties who can play using a standard guitar perfectly.

When you are holding your guitar while sitting you will notice that the body of the guitar is resting on your right leg (If your right handed, left leg if your left handed) the guitar will rest on the leg furthest away from the headstock. Try to sit in this position for a little while taking mental notes on how your posture is and how it should be.

We are going to focus on your fretting hand, that's the hand closest to the neck of the guitar. Your thumb needs to be behind the neck of the guitar with the remaining fingers being slightly curled held just above the strings, it is important to keep these fingers curled at the knuckle unless you are told otherwise.

The Guitar Pick

By now you will have bought yourself a few picks and if you haven't you should, you will soon find out that picks have a habit of going missing. Picks come in different thicknesses, brands and shapes you can play around with them and find the type you favor but for now we will use a medium pick its not to hard or to flimsy.

1. Open your picking hand and open your palm so it is facing you. Your picking hand is the one positioned closest to the bridge.
2. Close your hand and make a very loose fist making sure that you thumb is next to your index finger.
3. Turn your hand so you are looking at its profile you should now have your thumbs knuckle facing you.
4. Use your other hand to put the pick between your thumb and index finger. The pick should be behind the knuckle of your thumb.
5. Make sure the point of the pick is facing away from your fist and is sticking out about half an inch. Hold your pick firmly.
6. Put your picking hand over the sound hole of the acoustic guitar or if you are using an electric guitar over the body. With the thumb knuckles facing you your picking hand should be floating just above the strings. Don't rest your picking hand on the body of the guitar or the strings.
7. Use your wrist only to strum don't use your whole arm, using a downward action strike the sixth string, that is the string furthest from you. Sometimes this will cause an excessive rattle just simply hit the string a little softer.
8. Now do the same but in an upward stroke. Repeat this exercise several times making sure to minimize the movement of your picking hand, one short picking stroke downwards and one short picking stroke upwards.
9. Do the same exercise on all other strings starting with the sixth string and moving up towards the first strings.
10. Most of all remember practice makes perfect you may feel a little awkward to start but the more you practice the more fluent you will become. Don't forget to recheck your posture from time to time and adjust if necessary.
